The Houston Surgical Group staff join a few of their patients to talk weight loss surgery from all perspectives

Choosing to undergo weight loss surgery is a life-changing decision, one that no one should take lightly. At Houston Surgical Group we make sure every patient we see for bariatric surgery consultation is provided with all of the information they need to make the best possible decision for themselves. As much as we know how great an impact weight loss surgery can have on a patient's health and wellness Ñ both physical and emotional Ñ we know it isn't the right choice for everyone.

In the interest of providing prospective weight loss surgery patients with the best and most comprehensive information possible, we once again joined the Sunday Health Hour radio show to discuss weight loss surgery. (Last week's episode in which Dr. Ayyar discusses medically supervised weight loss and weight loss surgery.) Not only did our staff appear on this week's show, but you'll also get to hear from a few of our valued patients.

What the staff have to say

In addition to showing off their bilingual skills (Spanish patients very welcome!), the Houston Surgical Group staff discuss the practice's focus on bariatric surgery as well as the focus on minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive bariatric surgery greatly reduces a patient's recovery time, minimizes the scarring, and significantly reduces the post-operative pain a patient will experience.

We also get to hear from Maritza, a bariatric coordinator. This is one of the women in the office who will carefully guide you through the entire process of undergoing weight loss surgery, everything from those initial questions and the insurance process all the way through the surgical procedure and after-care, including nutrition consultation. As much as the surgeons are there to guide you through this process and will do so in a compassionate and truly caring manner, it's basically Maritza's job to be your best friend when it comes to this procedure, making her a valuable resource for weight loss surgery information.

What the patients have to say

One of the best parts of this podcast is getting to hear from real patients that have undergone weight loss surgery at the Northwest Houston Surgical Association. One of these patients is Justin, who joins the show to talk about his unbelievably quick recovery time from surgery as well as the underlying medical conditions his surgery helped treat. His high blood pressure, elevated heart rate and joint pain were virtually eliminated. Justin's fellow patient Paula joins the show to discuss her decision to pursue weight loss surgery in order to work towards getting pregnant and to help eliminate her diabetes.

The patients speak frankly about the challenges they faced adjusting to the lifestyle changes that accompanied the surgery, the exact level of pain they experienced (classified by Paula as the discomfort that would come from doing a lot of crunches), and their personal reasons for pursuing weight loss surgery.

All in all, Justin has lost 182 lbs., and Paula has lost 128 lbs. Even better? With their new lives, Justin has discovered a love of kayaking and riding roller coasters, two activities he wasn't able to do before the bariatric surgery. And as for Paula? She loves to shop, and can find clothes that look great on her in stores she never even used to walk into.
