Dr. Manny Ayyar discusses weight loss, surgery and minimally invasive techniques
At Northwest Houston Surgical Association, we know how life-changing the surgeries we perform can be. But we also know how much fear and anxiety can accompany the idea of undergoing surgery. That's why whenever we have the opportunity to get the word out about everything that goes into getting surgery - from consultation to minimally invasive techniques to aftercare - we gladly take it.
We also gladly take the opportunity to discuss obesity, and the barriers that can keep people from achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
KSEV AM 700 recently gave us the opportunity to discuss obesity, non-surgical weight loss and weight loss surgery. Dr. Manny Ayyar sat down with Sunday Health Hour for an interesting and informative discussion, complete with call in questions. You can listen to the entire discussion right here.
A widespread issue
As Dr. Ayyar points out, there are currently over 35 million Americans who are obese. So why is it that obesity has to be such a shameful or embarrassing topic? Dr. Ayyar states that the number one reason people don't seek help for losing weight is that they are dealing with shame over their condition.
"It's a terrible reason to not see your doctor," says Dr. Ayyar. "[Patients dealing with obesity] aren't able to enjoy their lives or the aspects of their lives they really hold dear, and they don't recognize it. It's so insidious. It slowly creeps up on you until you're not able to do the things you want to do."
The Houston Surgical Group approach to weight loss
Dr. Ayyar goes on to explain that the Houston Surgical Group offers a multi-modality approach to the issue of weight loss, beginning with a medical evaluation and leading to a host of medically supervised weight loss options, including bariatric surgery.
Dr. Ayyar also states that as important as exercise can be, it can only lead to a 5-7% weight loss for more patients, making diet the most important factor. That's why the Houston Surgical Group boasts a registered dietitian that will help patients develop a healthy and enjoyable diet that will lead to safe weight loss.
Dr. Ayyar of course also goes on to discuss bariatric surgery. He outlines the process of the pre-surgery evaluations, including psychological evaluations and a full medical evaluation. He also lets us in on what to expect from the surgery itself, the recovery, and the next steps a patient takes to achieve a healthy and enjoyable life.
