Finding the weight loss solution that is right for you

There is so much the average person doesn't know about weight loss and weight loss surgery that a caring doctor who specializes in this topic could tell them. At Houston Surgical Group, we see patients every day from Houston TX and Cypress TX who want to be educated about their weight loss options. However, we wish we could explain the process to everyone, not just the people who walk through our doors. That's why we took the opportunity to join the Sunday Health Hour radio show on AM 700 KSEV.

In past episodes, our doctors, staff and patients have joined Sunday Health Hour to talk all things weight loss surgery, including the specifics of navigating the medical system in order to find successful weight loss options, and patient-led discussions about the impact of bariatric surgery Ñ fear of surgery, the minimally invasive weight loss surgery options offered by the Houston Surgical Group, the pain accompanying these minimally invasive surgeries (compared by one patient to the discomfort you would feel after doing a lot of sit-ups), and the life-changing results.

In this episode, Dr. Amr joins the host to talk about the various weight loss options offered by the Northwest Houston Surgical Association. (Just because it's a surgical association doesn't mean surgery is the right solution for everyone; we offer medically supervised weight loss as well that includes the careful work of a dietitian.) Dr. Amr is also joined by one of his patients, Jeremy, as well as his wife. They have a scary but hopeful story to tell.

To begin with, Dr. Amr discusses the process he and his patients go through in order to find the optimal weight loss option. No two people are the same, and neither are their needs when it comes to weight loss. Dr. Amr discusses both the weight loss surgery and non-surgical weight loss options provided by the Houston Surgical Group, as well as the lengths the Houston Surgical Group doctors go to in order to educate their patients and ensure they receive a treatment plan that is ideal for their specific conditions, needs, lifestyle and goals.

We also hear from patient Jeremy and his wife Kelly. Jeremy was prompted to look into weight loss surgery after he was hospitalized when a blood clot his lungs. This is a very scary condition, one that can even be fatal. Even scarier, this was the second blood clot Jeremy's body had thrown. The first one hit his heart.

Like many people, Jeremy originally thought he should be able to handle weight loss on his own, without medical intervention. But obesity is a medical issue like any other Ñ at some point, it simply requires medical treatment. Jeremy simply decided he was tired of being ""the big guy waddling around."" He was ready to make a change, and make a change he did. Jeremy started out at a weight of 486 lbs and a BMI of 69. Jeremy has so far lost 160 lbs and he estimates that having bariatric surgery has given him another 20 years of life.

Other topics discussed in this episode include the cost of weight loss surgery, insurance coverage options, what the Houston Surgical Group can do to help you get your procedure covered, and revised weight loss surgeries, such as when Dr. Amr revised a LAP-BAND surgery into a gastric bypass to get better results for a patient.
